Cooper-Hewitt - Pop-up book: Puss in Boots

Pop-up book: Puss in Boots The adventures of this resourceful and loyal master cat appear in various folktales throughout Europe. The best known is Le Chat Botté, written by Charles Perrault in 1697. Illustrator C. Carey Cloud and paper engineer Harold Lentz collaborated to create this dramatic pop-up edition. Originally written by Charles Perrault (16281703) Adapted and illustrated by C. Carey Cloud and Harold B. Lentz Published by Blue Ribbon Press New York, NY, 1934 Smithsonian Institution Libraries. PZ8 .P98 1934e Wall Stories: Children's Wallpapers and Books On view: October 3, 2008April 5, 2009 This exhibition will explore the relationship between wallpapers and books created for children through works from the permanent collection and the National Design Library. From their beginning in the 1870s, children's wallpapers have been strongly influenced by literature and popular culture. Works on view will include papers illustrated with nursery rhymes and designs inspired by works of fiction and adventure, such as Peter Rabbit, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella. The exhibition also will trace the evolution of children's books from instructional to fictional and include developments such as movable and pop-up books, which added an interactive element to children's reading. Wall Stories: Childrens Wallpaper and Books is made possible in part by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts, a State agency. Additional support is provided in part by Esme Usdan, Margery and Edgar Masinter, The Liman Foundation and The Walt Disney Company.

Nin-Culmell Variations on Milán: Brouwer

For high resolution and stereo sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OG0zmn7iOH0&fmt=18 From a 1972 LP recording by Leo Brouwer that was never reissued as a CD. Joaquín Nin-Culmell's Six Variations on a Theme of Luis Milán (1945; based on Milán's Pavana VI) are performed here by Cuban guitarist Leo Brouwer. The world premiere of these variations was by José Rey de la Torre at New York's Town Hall on 10 November 1947. The piece is a series of meditations on 16th century Spanish rhythms and colors. "Joaquín María Nin-Culmell (b Berlin, 5 Sept 1908; d Berkeley, CA, 14 Jan 2004). American composer and pianist of Cuban descent. Son of musician Joaquín Nin and singer Rosa Culmell, he began his musical studies in Barcelona with Granados student Conchita Badia and later studied at the Schola Cantorum and the Paris Conservatoire, where his teachers included Dukas. Cortot and Viñes were among his piano teachers. During the summers of 1930, 1932 and 1934 Nin-Culmell studied with de Falla and in 1936 gave the first performance of de Falla's Pour le tombeau de Paul Dukas. In 1939 he moved to the USA, where he continued to give premières of works by Spanish composers. His teaching appointments included positions at Middlebury College (Vermont; 1939-1940), Williams College (Massachusetts; 1940-1950) and the University of California, Berkeley (1950-1974). In 1962 he was named a corresponding member of the Real Academia de San Fernando. Nin-Culmell strove in his works to capture the spirit, rather than the letter, of Spanish folk music, often changing the rhythm, mode or melodic contour of traditional melodies. A number of his works, including the ballet El burlador de Sevilla and the opera La Celestina, draw upon Spanish literature." from Carol A. Hess at Grove Music Online (acc. 12 Nov 2008; slightly modified) Additional biographical information and a list of works can be found at http://www.joaquin-nin-culmell.com/aboutjoaquin.htm Recording: Leo Brouwer "Les classiques de Cuba" 1972. Erato STU 70669 (Europe)/Musical Heritage Society MHS 3839 (USA). In this recording, Brouwer played a guitar built by Francisco Simplicio in Barcelona (1926). Portrait of Nin-Culmell by Paul Swan (c. 1924). In response to the curious: yes, the young woman next to Nin-Culmell in the first photograph is his sister, the writer Anaïs Nin. Sorry, I do not have the score.

Johnny Green & His Orchestra - Two Cigarets In The Dark

By special request, I upload this lovely song; while preparing it, I was unaware that jozefsterkens had posted a great version by Alberta Hunter. However, it's always interesting to hear a different interpretation. Johnny Green (1908-1989) was an American songwriter, composer, musical arranger, and conductor. His most famous song was one of his earliest, Body and Soul. Green was accepted by Harvard at the age of 15, entering the University in 1924. Between semesters, bandleader Guy Lombardo heard his Harvard Gold Coast Orchestra and hired him to create dance arrangements for his nationally famous orchestra. Green was educated in music, history, economics, and government before returning to pursue a master's degree in the field of English literature. His instruments were the piano and the saxophone, although he abandoned the latter after college. Nathaniel Shilkret and Paul Whiteman commissioned Green to write larger works for orchestra, such as Nightclub, premiered by Whiteman at Carnegie Hall in 1933 with Green on solo piano. During the early '30s he also wrote music for numerous films at Paramount's Astoria Studios; conducted in East Coast theatres; and toured vaudeville as musical director. Green spent much of 1933 in London, where he contributed songs to both Mr. Whittington, a musical comedy for Jack Buchanan at the London Hippodrome, and to Big Business, the first musical comedy ever written especially for BBC Radio. On Green's return to the U.S.A. early in 1934, William Paley, president of the Columbia Broadcasting System and an investor in New York's St Regis Hotel, encouraged him to form what became known as Johnny Green, His Piano and Orchestra. He continued conducting on radio and in theatres into the 1940s, also leading a dance band for the short-lived Royale Records label in 1939-40, until he decided to move permanently to Hollywood and work in the film business. Green particularly made an impression at MGM, where in the 1940s, along with orchestrator Conrad Salinger, he was one of the musicians most responsible for changing the overall sound of the MGM Symphony Orchestra. Johnny Green's credits as musical executive, arranger, conductor and composer are considerable, but include such highlights as Raintree County, Bathing Beauty, Something in the Wind, Easter Parade (for which he won his first Academy Award), Summer Stock, An American in Paris (which won him his second Academy Award), Royal Wedding, High Society and West Side Story (another Academy Award winner for him). Green was a respected board member of ASCAP, and guest conductor with symphonies around the world, including the Hollywood Bowl, Denver Symphony, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and more. This great recording was made for ARC in 1934. Vocal by George Bauler.

Fantasia Poetica Calace Sebastiaan de Grebber-Eva v.d. Dool

The Fantasia Poetica by Raffaele Calace (1863-1934) for mandolin and piano shown here was filmed during a concert by the Dutch mandolinist Sebastiaan de Grebber and Eva van den Dool. The performance took place in the Concert Hall of the Centre for the Arts - De Muzerie - in Zwolle on Saterday July 5th, 2008. Raffaele Calaces Fantasia Poetica is one of his finest works for this combination of instruments; the modern mandolin and grand piano. Raffaele Calace was born in Naples as the son of Antonio Calace, a successful instrument maker. Raffaele grew up in a music loving family and was initially trained to become a musician but, as came true later, also inherited the love for instrument making from his father. During his youth he discovered the possibilities of the mandolin and, once at the music highschool, became an unequalled virtuoso on his beloved instrument, the mandolin. After he had graduated with honours at the Regio Conservatorio di Musica in Naples, his intentions were to give the mandolin a full and accepted place in music. To achieve this, he toured through Europe and Japan, and made three long-playing records. Raffaele wrote about 200 compositions that belong to the most beautiful and technically difficult works written for the mandolin. His virtuosic Fantasia Poetica Op. 56 is an excellent example of true Italian Neo-Romanticism and a fine example within the literature for mandolin and piano. Raffaele Calace also wrote didactical works of which his mandolin method published in 1910 is much-praised. It elaborates on the eighteen-century Italian mandolin tutors by i.e. Giovanni Battista Gervaiso and Gabriele Leone and shows today the development of the Italian style of playing the mandolin over more than 250 years at its best. His mandolin method can therefore be seen as a bridge between the methods by the mandolin virtuoso Silvio Ranieri (1882-1956), who had settled in Brussels at the start of the 20th Century and the American based Italian master of the instrument Giuseppe Pettine (1874-1966). Raffaele Calace and his brother Nicola Calace (1859-1923) were, besides their activities as musicians, also recognised as excellent makers of the instruments of the Neapolitan mandolin family. They introduced improvements in the building techniques such as the enlargement of the sound box and - like the Roman master luthier Luigi Embergher - the fingerboard that extended over the sound hole to enlarge the ambitus of the mandolin. When Nicola emigrated to the U.S.A. in 1898, Raffaele continued the Calace luthier workshop with his daughter Maria, a gifted mandolin player as well, and his son Giuseppe Calace. Today the Calace atelier is run by Calace´s grandson Raffaele Jr. and still known for its excellent made instruments of the Mandolin family. Sebastiaan de Grebber is one of the leading musicians of the youngest generation of mandolinists. He studied the mandolin at the musicschool De Muzerie and ArtEZ Music Conservatory in Zwolle (Netherlands) under the guidance of Alex Timmerman, in Italy at the Conservatorio C. Pollini in Padova, with the famous Italian mandolinist Mr. Ugo Orlandi, and at the Messiaen Academie/Highschool for the Arts in Zwolle. To complete his music studies at the Messiaen Academie Sebastiaan gave a final concert after which the jury, enlarged for the occasion with Maestro Ugo Orlandi of the Conservatorio C. Pollini, unanimously in their opinion granted him the highest possible predicate: Master of music with distinction. Besides being a real ambassador for the virtuosic and original Italian mandolin repertoire of the 20th Century, Sebastiaans interest lies in the Modern music of our own time. A wonderful example of the outcome of that interest is this video with Raffaele Calaces compsition Fantasia Poetica Op. 56. Here Sebastiaan plays a Luigi Embergher/Giannino Cerrone 5bis concert mandolin made in 1956. The score of the Fantasia Poetica by Raffaele Calace and other music of Raffaele Calace can be ordered from the Calace firm in Napels (Italy).
