RUN Winschoten De RUN is Nederlands oudste ultraloop (1976) 100 km wedstrijd in ons land. De wedstrijd wordt sinds 1976 op de tweede zaterdag van september gehouden. De sololoop staat sinds 1995 ook in het teken van het officieel Nederlands Kampioenschap 100 km. Run Winschoten is het grootste en gezelligste RUN hardloopevenement van Nederland(prov. The race has being held since 1976 on the second Saturday of September. Since 1995 the solo race exists of a official Dutch Championship 100 km. From the year 1992 there have been organized international championships. For several years following RUN Winschoten has been allowed to organize an European Championship. World Challenges have been organized in 1995, 1997 and in the year 2000. The first World Cup 100 km has been organized in 2004. Mr. Andy Milroy, former technical director of the IAU was glad to allot the first World Cup to Winschoten because he appreciates the STUW's ability to offer the athletes a good race track and the organization's excellent care. Foundation In 1976 the idea came into existence of Aquilo to organize once only - for the purpose of attracting people for the lack of accommodation for the 60 members the athletics association had at that time -- a 100 km race at Winschoten. The race got the dazzling name "RUN". At that first RUN hundred athletes started the race to complete one large round of 100 km and it became a great success. The enthusiastic athletes convinced the organization to make it a yearly event. To take the pressure of the small athletics association Aquilo, after a few years the Foundation RUN was realised to take over the organization of the race. In the year 1979 the one large round of 100 km was being replaced by two rounds of 50 km and a few years later the organization made it four rounds of 25 km and even later it became five rounds of 20 km. But the event became less popular every year, both to the athletes and the spectators. The 1990 edition of the RUN was a disaster, organizational speaking, and Aquilo with former chairman Harm Noor decided to intervene. Races A new foundation was established; The Stichting Ultraloop Winschoten (STUW), which set up a complete new race within five months. There came a spectacular track of 10 km through the centre of Winschoten with start/finish and passing straight through the manifestation hall of Cultural Centre "De Klinker" which had the purpose of being the new, large attracting race. That new race in 1991 became a great success with as main point the world best time (at a by IAAF measured track) of 6.26.20 of Russian winner Konstantin Santalov.
