KGNU-FM (88.5 FM) is independent, noncommercial, community radio station broadcasting a Educational format. Licensed to Boulder, Colorado, USA, the station serves the Denver area. The station is currently owned by Boulder Community Broadcast Association, Inc. and features programing from Public Radio International.[1]
Content
KGNU broadcasts a mix of music, news and information. KGNU has seven full-time staff-members, one half-time staff member, and more than 230 volunteers who program and administer the station on-air and off-air. It broadcasts locally produced programming as well as programs from Pacifica Radio and the BBC. KGNU is a founding member of the Grassroots Radio Coalition.
As of 2005, KGNU has about 10,000 paying listener members. The Boulder Community Broadcast Association, Inc., is the FCC licensee and is legally responsible for the station.
History
KGNU was created in 1975 by the students in a class at the Boulder Free School called "A Desperate Attempt to Start a Radio Station, Part II". KGNU went on the air at 88.5 FM with a 1300W transmitter on May 21, 1977. In the summer of 2004 KGNU acquired a second frequency, 1390 AM in Denver; the first time that a community radio station expanded into a major radio market by purchasing a station.
