Hamas will talk peace if Israel leaves Gaza - Syrian president Bashar al-Assad

In an exclusive interview, Syrian president Bashar al-Assad discusses Hamas and the Palestinian position. Syrian president's perspective. Hamas is ready to agree to peace if the Israeli army will stop military operations and withdraw from Gaza, Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad told CNN Tuesday. "They are ready (to make a deal)," Al-Assad told CNN's Cal Perry in an exclusive interview. "They were ready, they are ready. Today, the factors have changed so the requirement will change at the same time. "We cannot talk about the same condition, like what happened a few years ago. Otherwise, we'll keep moving from a cease-fire to another conflict to another breaking of this cease-fire and so on. The more blood you have, the more difficult to talk about peace will be." Al-Assad met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy earlier Tuesday. Sarkozy appealed to Al-Assad for help in bringing about a halt to the conflict in the Middle East -- an Israeli incursion into Gaza following eight days of Israeli airstrikes. Palestinians point to the action as evidence of Israeli aggression; Israel maintains it was defending itself from repeated rockets fired into the southern part of the country by Hamas militants in Gaza. Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, but receives backing from Syria, which considers it a resistance movement. Exiled Hamas leader Khalid Meshaal lives in Damascus. "The support is political, the support of their cause," Al-Assad told CNN. "They are under aggression ... actually what they do is respond, they don't start. So we support their cause. We support the Palestinian state, independent Palestinian state, and we support their position to defend themselves." * Earlier Tuesday, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair said that any cease-fire in the Gaza conflict will require "clear and definitive action" to halt the smuggling of weapons and money into the Hamas-ruled Palestinian territory. "If there is strong action on that front, so that Israel feels it has achieved something -- namely the end of the smuggling of weapons and finance to Hamas -- then I think it is possible to resolve this reasonably quickly," Blair told CNN. " If that doesn't happen, if we're not in that position, then obviously it's going to go on." Blair is now the envoy of the Mideast Quartet, whose members -- the United Nations, United States, Russia and the European Union -- are attempting to find a resolution to the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He is one of several European officials now in the region in an effort to bring an end to the Israeli campaign against Gaza. Sarkozy met Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to press for a 48-hour humanitarian cease-fire -- a plan Olmert's government considered and rejected last week. And a European Union delegation will also meet with Palestinian and other regional leaders during its visit. But Olmert spokesman Mark Regev said any cease-fire must guarantee "real quiet" -- and prevent Hamas from replenishing and expanding its arsenal. "Before the last cease-fire with Hamas began, Hamas had missiles with a range of 20 km (13 miles)," Regev said. "By the end of the cease-fire, the range of the missiles grew to 40 km. Israel does not want the next cease-fire to allow them to get missiles with a range of 60 km." Hamas won control of the Palestinian Authority parliament in elections in 2006 and wrested control of Gaza from Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah party in 2007. But it refuses to recognize Israel's right to exist, and Israel, the United States and the EU consider it a terrorist organization. advertisement Meanwhile, Arab foreign ministers met at the United Nations to work up a U.N. draft resolution calling for Israel to stop its offensive in Gaza and for Hamas, which rules the territory, to cease firing rockets at the Jewish state. Abbas plans to present the Arab League's draft resolution to the Security Council Tuesday. The resolution will also demand that Israel open the border crossings to a steady supply of humanitarian aid, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said. - Thanks to ArchivesAlgeriennes - Reporters in Gaza : http://ingaza.wordpress.com/ http://electronicintifada.net/new.shtml

Nicolae Titulescu at Nations Associations

Nicolae Titulescu at Nations Associations Nicolae Titulescu (March 4, 1882, Craiova - March 17, 1941, Cannes) was a well-known Romanian diplomat, at various times government minister, and President of the League of Nations. He served as president of the League of Nations for two terms. He was a member of the Freemasonry. Born in Craiova to a solicitor, he passed through his childhood at his father's estate in Tituleşti, Olt County. Upon graduating with honours in 1900 from the Carol I High School in Craiova, he studied law in Paris, obtaining his doctorate with the thesis Essai sur une théorie des droits éventuels. In 1905 he returned to Romania as a professor of law at the University of Iaşi, and in 1907 he moved to Bucharest. Following the Romanian elections of 1912, he became a parliamentarian with the Conservative-Democrat Party led by Take Ionescu, and five years later he became a member of the government of Ion I. C. Brătianu as Minister of Finance. In the summer of 1918, together with other prominent Romanians (Take Ionescu, Octavian Goga, Traian Vuia, Constantin Mille) he formed, in Paris, the National Romanian Committee, with the purpose of promoting in international public opinion the right of the Romanian people to national unity, the committee being officially recognised as the plenipotentiary de facto organ of the Romanian nation. From 1927 to 1936, Nicolae Titulescu was at various times the Minister of Foreign Affairs. See also Savel Rădulescu. Beginning in 1921 he functioned as the permanent representative of Romania to the League of Nations in Geneva, being chosen twice (in 1930 and 1931) President of that organization. In this capacity he fought for the preservation of stable borders through the maintenance of peace, for good relations between both large and small neighbouring states, for the respect of the sovereignty and equality of all nations in the international community, for collective security, and the prevention of aggression. In 1936, King Carol II removed Titulescu from all official positions, asking him to leave the country. Settling first in Switzerland, he later moved to France. While in exile, Nicolae Titulescu continued through conferences and newspaper articles to propagate the idea of the preservation of peace, perceiving the danger of a war that was to come all too soon after. He returned to Romania in November, 1937, partly through the efforts of Iuliu Maniu. In 1937 Titulescu took refuge in France, at Cannes, denouncing the Romanian Fascist regime. Nicolae Titulescu died in Cannes (or in Souvrettes, Switzerland, according to Petre Pandrea) following a long illness, in 1941. In his will he asked to be buried in Romania; this became possible on 14-th of march 1992, when his remains have been reburied in the Sfânta Ecaterina cemetery from Scheii Brasovului, next to St. Nicholas Church, in Braşov.

WPHECN #5 History of economic thought

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_economic_thought - tile policy was undesirable to strive for a favourable balance of trade it is, would be un desirable. said Hume, in any case impossible. Hume held that any surplus of exports that might be achieved would be paid for by imports of gold and silver. This would increase the money supply, causing prices to rise. That in turn would cause a decline in exports until the balance with imports is restored. The circular flow See also: Bernard Mandeville, John Law, Pierre le Pesant de Boisguilbert, and Victor de Riqueti Similarly disenchanted with regulation on trademarks inspired by mercantilism, a Frenchman name Vincent de Gournay (1712-1759) is reputed to have asked why it was so hard to laissez faire, laissez passer (free trade, free enterprise). He was one of the early physiocrats, a word from Greek meaning "government of nature", who held that agriculture was the source of wealth. As historian David B. Danbom wrote, the Physiocrats "damned cities for their artificiality and praised more natural styles of living. [17] Over the end of the seventeenth and They celebrated farmers." beginning of the eighteenth century big advances in natural science and anatomy were being made, including the discovery of blood circulation through the human body. This concept was mirrored in the physiocrats' economic theory, with the notion of a circular flow of income throughout the economy. Fran**ois Quesnay Fran**ois Quesnay (1694-1774) was the court physician to King Louis XV of France. He believed that trade and industry were not sources of wealth, and instead in his book, Tableau **conomique ( 1758, Economic Table) argued that agricultural surpluses, by flowing through the economy in the form of rent, wages and purchases were the real economic movers. Firstly, said Quesnay, regulation impedes the flow of income throughout all social classes and therefore economic development. Secondly, taxes on the productive classes, such as farmers, should be reduced in favour of rises for unproductive classes, such as landowners, since their luxurious way of life distorts the income flow. Pierre Samuel du Pon t de Nemours, a promin en t Ph ysiocrat, emigrated to th e US an d h is son foun ded DuPon t, th e world's secon d biggest ch emicals compan y. Jacques TurgotJacques Turgot (1727-1781) was born in Paris and from an old Norman family. His best known work, R**flexions sur la formation et la distribution des richesses (1766, Reflections on the Formation and Distribution of Wealth) developed Quesnay's theory that land is the only source of wealth. Turgot viewed society in terms of three classes: the productive agricultural class, the salaried artisan class (classe stipendice) and the landowning class (classe disponible). He argued that only the net product of land should be taxed and advocated the complete freedom of commerce and industry. In August 1774, Turgot was appointed to be Minister of Finance and in the space of two years introduced many anti-mercantile and anti-feudal measures supported by the Jacques Turgot wan ted King. A statement of his guiding principles, given to the King were to abolish all taxes "no bankruptcy, no tax increases, no borrowing." Turgot's except th ose on lan d. ultimate wish was to have a single tax on land and abolish all other indirect taxes, but measures he introduced before that were met with overwhelming opposition from landed interests. Two edicts in particular, one suppressing corv* *es (charges from farmers to aristocrats) and another renouncing privileges given to guilds inflamed influential opinion. He was forced from office in 1776. The Wealth of Nations See also: Industrial revolution and Anders Chydenius Adam Smith (1723-1790) is popularly seen as the father of modern political economy. His publication of the An Inquiry Into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations in 1776 happened to coincide not only with the American Revolution, shortly before the Europe wide upheavals of the French Revolution, but also the dawn of a new industrial revolution that allowed more wealth to be created on a larger scale than ever before. Smith was a Scottish moral philosopher, whose first break was The Theory of Moral Sentiments ( 1759). He argued in this that people's ethical systems develop through personal relations with other individuals, that right and wrong are sensed through others' reactions to one's behaviour. This gained Smith more popularity than his next work, The Wealth of Nations, which the general public initially [18] Yet Smith's political economic magnum opus was ignored. successful in circles that mattered.Adam Smith , th e fath er of modern political econ omy.
