2008 Time-Based Art Festival Preview
A preview of the upcoming 2008 Time-Based Art Festival (TBA:08) in Portland, OR with Artistic Director Mark Russell, Visual Art Program Director Kristan Kennedy, and Performing Arts Program Director Erin Boberg-Doughton
The Time-Based Art Festival is Portland Institute for Contemporary Art's (PICA) annual convergence of contemporary performance, dance, music, new media and visual arts projects in Portland, OR.
Now in its sixth year, TBA:08 is presented from September 5-14, 2008 with visual art installations running until October 5. The TBA Festival examines and celebrates every form of contemporary art and is the only festival of its kind in North America. It bridges disciplines and geography with morning workshops, daytime installations, noon-time lectures, afternoon salons, evening performances, outdoor happenings, and no shortage of surprises at our one-of-a-kind-late night hangout THE WORKS. Presented in a variety of theatres, cabarets, black boxes, music halls, industrial warehouses and galleries throughout Portland, TBA: 08 is a culmination of new work created by artists in residence, international artists, emerging new performers, and expansive work from the burgeoning Pacific Northwest.

Kenny Mellman is Grace Jones / PICA TBA 2005 at THE WORKS
Kenny Mellman Is Grace Jones / Presented by The Portland Institute for Contemporary Art
"(Kenny Mellman is) Grace Jones continues the pianist/singer's battle against all that is bland and conforming in contemporary American society. In his running narrative of Jones' tumultuous career, Mellman doesn't portray Jones as a campy gay caricature. Instead he makes the Jamaican diva's persona uniquely his own. Using text drawn from interviews and TV appearances, Mellman punctuates the narrative with both lesser-known numbers from the Jones canon and mega-hits such as 'Pull up to the Bumper.'"
ÑJ. Cooper Robb
ACT ONE of I've Got a Bulletproof Heart: Kenny Mellman, of the punk cabaret act Kiki and Herb, performs Kenny Mellman Is Grace Jones. Utilizing only a piano, a drum-machine, a pair of sunglasses and a hood, Mellman explores the connection between a gay Jewish piano-player and a black woman with a bad attitude who ruled the discofloors and the airwaves for many a year. Using Grace Jones' own interviews as text, Kenny Mellman Is Grace Jones is a requiem for the loss of creativity in the nightlife world and a battlecry for a resurrection.

Neal Medlyn / The Beyonce Experience at THE NEW MUSEUM 8
Neal Medlyn / The Beyonce Experience
Neal Medlyn is a New York City artist who mixs physically intense performance, personal confession, pop culture satire, and profane humor to create playfully explicit work that is disarming, charming, and shockingly direct. Neal Medlyn's work cannibalizes and regurgitates the most absurd aspects of pop culture into a type of spastic avant-garde religious revival,
The Neal Medlyn Experience Live--Neal's fanatical deconstruction of The Beyonce Experience Live DVD, featuring a cast of Destiny Child impersonators, birthday cake, and a box fan to blow his hair—and I AM TRYING TO HEAR MYSELF—Ferver's tell-all, show-all choreographed actualization of America's unrequited sexual fantasy with "more."
Neal Medlyn has appeared at Joe's Pub, P.S.122, the Public Theater (as a featured performer in Suzan Lori Parks' 365 Days/365 Plays), Fez at Time Café, the Knitting Factory main stage, Ars Nova, Galapagos Art Space, Here Arts Center, The Culture Project, and various other venues. He has staged dozens of original works, among them the sold-out Neal Medlyn, the Paris Hilton of Performance Art, Neal Medlyn's Lionel Richie Opera, and Kenny Mellman + Neal Medlyn = R. Kelly with Kenny Mellman of Kiki & Herb. He has toured extensively around the U.S., and has appeared at the Portland Institute for Contemporary Art's, T:B:A Festival in Portland and the Philadelphia Fringe Festival Late Night Cabaret. Medlyn holds the title of Mr. Lower East Side 2004 and co-starred with Karen Finley in George and Martha. In addition to performing, he has appeared in several Rev. Jen Miller/Nick Zedd films, go-go danced, written horoscopes, appeared in dances by Adrienne Truscott and David Neumann, and been to a party with Monica Lewinsky. His work has been written about in the New York Times, The Onion, Time Out New York, and Gothamist, and was featured on NPR's Here Now. His Internet TV show, Neal Medlyn's Land of Make Believe, a children's show/soap opera about stuffed animals who have complicated sex lives and plot to destroy each other, was bought and shown on nerve.com and was highly rated and widely viewed.
